Creating Change

We offer personal debt counselling for people affected by stress and anxiety linked to money worries.

Our project aims to ease the burden and stigma of debt by providing practical solutions and money management advice to people on a one-to-one basis.

We can address any issues and worries about benefits and welfare and support people to sort out their finances and get back on track.

A full-time support worker is easily accessible at community venues across the borough and the service, which is free and confidential, includes:

  • negotiating with creditors;
  • debt management plans;
  • bankruptcy support;
  • personal budgeting;
  • access to affordable credit.

People who use our service will receive the encouragement, knowledge and skills to take control of their finances so they can work towards improving their circumstances and overall wellbeing.

DWDT already offers money advice in local communities but has seen a growing need for personal debt counselling due partly to recent changes to the benefit system. The increase has put a strain on some existing support services and DWDT is now running a three-year “Creating Change” project funded by the Henry Smith charity.

The initiative aims to ease the burden and stigma of debt by providing practical solutions and money management tips to at least 600 people on a one-to-one basis.

A full-time support worker is available at community venues across the borough and the service, which is free and confidential, includes:

  • negotiating with creditors;
  • debt management plans;
  • bankruptcy support;
  • personal budgeting;
  • access to affordable credit;
  • self-help techniques to relieve anxiety.

Research has long shown a clear link between money problems and poor mental health. The Royal College of Psychiatrists describes debt as both a cause and consequence of mental health problems and says that 50 per cent of people in debt are affected??

DWDT Chair Marisa Graziano said that the project gives people the encouragement, knowledge and skills to take control of their finances and significantly improve their wellbeing.
